cora.

"And the crazy part of it was even if you were clever, even if you spent your adolescence reading John Donne and Shaw, even if you studied history or zoology or physics and hoped to spend your life pursuing some difficult and challenging career, you still had a mind full of all the soupy longings that every high-school girl was awash in... underneath it, all you longed to be was annihilated by love, to be swept off your feet, to be filled up by a giant prick spouting sperm, soapsuds, silk and satins and, of course, money."

This is what I caught my daughter doing this afternoon. )

One of my dogs was hit by a car a couple of days ago. I was running with them and she 'broke away from the pack' and wouldn't come back when I called her, which was really strange. All my dogs have excellent recall or else I'd keep them on leashes.

Anyway, she ran across the field and into the road, and I heard a squeal of tires and assumed the worst. Poor thing. I got yelled at, too, by the driver for not 'controlling my animals'. At least her death was quick, I suppose. And it was the dog who hates me, so I'm finding it hard to be too mournful. She bit me out of pure spite more times than I can count, and yet she's an absolute angel with my daughter. I don't know what her problem was, I'm the one who always fed her.

My daughter is devastated, so we'll take a trip to the shelter tomorrow to pick out a new dog. She wants a puppy, though, and I'm not sure if we have any at the moment - Elliot? We've never had a puppy before because our dogs have always been from shelters. I don't see the point in buying one from a breeder when there are so many dogs out there without homes. I suppose we'll see what happens.

Someone in my apartment block yesterday evening was blasting the most obnoxious music I've ever heard. It appeared to be a mixture of old school rap with a bit of dance thrown in. Although it was nice to rehear Gangsta's Paradise the first couple of times, after 15 repeats it got kind of old.

Anyway, the point of updating was to request a bit less of the Coolio, please. If I wanted to move in above a nightclub then I would've done so already.

Amelia locked herself in the bathroom yesterday. I wouldn't have noticed if the dogs weren't barking up a storm - I was napping, like the neglectful mother I am. Anyway, I tried to get her to open the door (you can only lock and open it from the inside) but she couldn't, and was slowly getting more and more hysterical. So I realised I was going to have to break the door down or something, and told Amelia to stand as far away from the door as possible. "Are you doing that Amelia?" "Yes mummy", she answered. So. I kicked the door down, which was shockingly easy, only to discover that actually she was standing right behind the door, which promptly fell on her and has given her an amazingly black eye.

I went to the grocery store this afternoon and two old ladies were loudly discussing child abuse whilst giving me evils. One even had the cheek to ask me, very suspiciously, how she'd gotten the black eye. She replied with "mummy threw a door on my head". I have never been so embarrassed in my life. Let this be a lesson to you all. I'm not sure how, but let it be.

Unexpected days off work are pretty blissful, especially when I'm child-free. I love my daughter, of course, but I'm naturally enjoying a break from the demands of taking care of a toddler. Amelia's father has taken her to Edmonton for a couple of weeks - he landed on the 19th, they spent a couple of days here and then he left on Saturday. He likes to take her into the city when he's over. For some reason he has a strange notion that she'll grow up weird if she stays in Ice River her whole life.

Anyway, I think I'll spend today catching up on the TV shows I've recorded and haven't gotten around to watching. I also plan to clean the apartment and make some sort of star chart for Amelia. I think she's old enough now that she understands the concept of tidying away her own toys and putting her empty plates and cups into the kitchen - and then there's things like eating all her vegetables - so the plan is to encourage good behaviour from as young an age as possible in the hopes it'll make it easier when she's older.

I'm not hopeful, but I can try.

I have no idea what to dress up as for Elliot's party. I'm really uncreative when it comes to stuff like that. Well, I'm really uncreative full stop, actually, which is strange since Amelia is constantly painting and making fairies out of toilet rolls. Maybe she gets it from her father. Anyway, the point is that I'm struggling, so suggestions would be most appreciated.

Who else is going and what are you going as? Maybe I can just steal someone else's idea.

It has come to my attention that all I ever do is sit in my pajamas and watch movies after about 8pm in the evening. My life is so horribly exciting, I shouldn't even write about it. You'll all get jealous. Tonight it's The Two Towers, because you cannot go wrong with Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom.

Anyway. Amelia's father has booked his flight over for the end of February (exactly 29 sleeps to go, she informs me) and I'm assuming he'll take her to Edmonton for a couple of weeks which will be nice. Ice River isn't really his thing, which isn't surprising since he's from Barbados.

I'm sure I've suitably bored you all now, so my job is done.

Has anyone else's power gone out or is it just our apartment block? It's currently 5.30am and nothing is working. My laptop is running off of battery - luckily it was fully charged when I switched it off last night.

And incase you're wondering why I'm up at this crazy hour, Amelia sometimes gets into my bed at this time and puts the kid's morning TV shows on - ordinarily she's very good about not waking me up (she's learnt that it's not worth my wrath), but today the TV wasn't working so I was kindly woken up and informed. Considerate child, really.

I hope someone in this building has a generator if the power doesn't come back on soon. Sam, I'm looking at you.

I received my ParksNet account details a week or so back, but I've only just gotten around to setting up my account. The idea certainly interests me, even if it is a little... unique. Then again, what isn't unique about Ice River?

I assume I'm meant to put up a little introduction to begin with, so here goes. My name is Cora Hogen and I live in the Maple Street apartments with my three year old daughter, Amelia. Yes, she's the half-black child whose father lives in Barbados that you all enjoy gossiping about. Amelia's place in Mrs Summerville's class has recently been confirmed with the elementary school for next fall, which we're both pleased about. She's in day care while I'm at work for the time being.

I work in the veterinary clinic with the most annoying man I have ever met in my life, my God- and spend a bit of time volunteering at the animal shelter each week. We also have a Cavalier, a Golden Retriever, a minature Poodle who hates me and a tabby cat at home, all of which we've obtained from different pounds and shelters over the years, so it's fair to say we're animal lovers. And I can't forget my brother, of course. He's an animal of the couch-hogging, dirty, smelly sort, and is currently staying at my apartment until he can find somewhere more suitable.

And that's entirely too much overshare, so let me figure out how to submit this and catch up on everybody else's entries.
